CUMPAN Tachometer and Gear Indicator for Yamaha XT 600
The Yamaha XT 600 and related models such as the TT 600 or XT 660 share a proven single-cylinder engine – but with different cockpit equipment depending on the model and year of manufacture. Not all of them have a tachometer, and none of them have a gear indicator as standard. The new function in CUMPAN allows the cockpit to be expanded in a targeted manner: in addition to a precise digital tachometer, a calculated gear indicator is now available, supplemented by an integrated speed indicator. This creates a compact retrofit solution – without any mechanical intervention in the transmission or drive train.
The RPM display shows the current engine speed as a numerical value and, depending on the selected layout, also as a bar graph. When driving, the combination of numerical and bar graph displays makes it easier to quickly orientate yourself.
Calculated gear indicator without existing gear sensor
For motorcycles without a factory-installed gear sensor, CUMPAN uses a combination of engine speed and recorded wheel speed. A reed sensor is used to determine wheel rotation—a magnet on the wheel generates one pulse per revolution. The wheel circumference and the number of gears are stored in the system. This is followed by a 180-second calibration drive, during which all gears are shifted through once. After completing this learning phase, the system recognizes the gear engaged while driving based on the recorded data.
When the vehicle is stationary, the display shows a dash instead of the gear – as usual, the existing indicator light in the cockpit takes over neutral detection.
Integrated speed display
Since wheel speed is recorded anyway, a speed display is also available. CUMPAN offers several display layouts, each with two to three freely assignable positions. Variables such as speed, gear display, or engine temperature can be individually assigned there—allowing you to customize your cockpit.
Direct evaluation of an existing 0–5 volt gear sensor remains possible and is the most technically elegant solution for compatible models. However, the new calculated gear indicator significantly expands the range of applications and opens up older motorcycles without the appropriate sensor technology in particular. This makes CUMPAN a modern retrofit solution for classic models such as the Yamaha XT 600 – and can also be adapted to other older vehicles.
