CUMPAN Tachometer and Engine Temperature for the Suzuki DR-Z4S / DR-Z4SM
With the DR-Z4S and DR-Z4SM, Suzuki relaunched an icon of the dual-sport and supermoto scene in 2025. The 398 cm³ single-cylinder is kept deliberately simple – the cockpit included. There is no tachometer and no engine-temperature readout. Anyone riding the single hard or heading off-road does so without direct feedback from the engine. That is exactly why we developed the CUMPAN Cockpit Assistant: it adds a precise RPM display, engine-temperature monitoring and an integrated shift light to the stock display – without any intervention in the vehicle electronics.
RPM display
The CUMPAN picks up the RPM signal via the supplied RPM signal tap and shows the current engine speed – depending on the layout as a number, as a bar or as a combination of both. On the rev-happy single-cylinder of the DR-Z4 in particular, an accurate reading helps keep the engine in its sweet spot.
Engine temperature at a glance
Using a temperature sensor on the engine case, the CUMPAN measures the oil temperature and displays it continuously. The warning thresholds are freely adjustable, so the system alerts you in good time before things get critical. This matters above all in slow off-road riding, when there is little airflow and the engine is under sustained load.
Integrated shift light
Because the DR-Z4 has no tachometer from the factory, the ideal shift point is hard to judge. That is precisely what the CUMPAN's integrated shift light takes care of: at a freely definable engine speed it gives a visual signal, supporting precise upshifts without a constant glance at the numbers. Two thresholds can be set: one for a cold engine and one once the engine has reached operating temperature. This lets you ride the DR-Z efficiently and gently on the engine.
More readouts and modular expansion
Besides RPM and temperature, the CUMPAN offers an ambient-temperature display with an automatic warning when there is a risk of black ice, plus an operating-hours and engine-cycle counter for planning maintenance intervals. Optional add-ons let you expand the system – for example with oil-pressure monitoring, air-fuel-ratio sensing (lambda / AFR), additional temperature measuring points or monitoring of the 12 V on-board voltage. The CUMPAN is operated by touch; six layouts and sixteen colours let you put the cockpit together to suit you. The weatherproof housing is designed for permanent use on the motorcycle.
Installation without touching the vehicle electronics
The scope of delivery is tailored to the DR-Z4S / DR-Z4SM (model year 2025–): the CUMPAN including connection cable, an M10 × 1.25 engine temperature sensor, a 12 V connector plug, the RPM signal tap as well as cable ties and a 3M VHB adhesive pad. Installation is done without any permanent modification to the wiring harness and can be reversed at any time without a trace; the matching display mount is available separately.
A handy detail on the DR-Z4: right behind the headlight mask there is an easily accessible tap for the switched 12 V on-board voltage (accessory / auxiliary-consumer connection). That is where the CUMPAN is connected.
Every step is shown in detail in our installation video and the complete, illustrated installation guide for the DR-Z4S.
Conclusion
The CUMPAN turns the very pared-down stock cockpit of the DR-Z4 into a configurable, full-colour display instrument: engine speed, engine temperature and shift point are readable at any time, on the road as well as off it. This gives the simple but rev-happy single exactly the feedback it lacks from the factory – with no modification to the engine or electronics.
