Not every combustion engine provides an RPM signal that a display unit can evaluate. On older vehicles such a tap is often missing entirely, or the available signal is so disturbed that the RPM display jumps or shows incorrect values. Affected vehicles include the YAMAHA TT 600, SIMSON Schwalbe, CITROËN 2CV and TRABANT.
The RPM Signal Filter picks up the ignition pulse inductively at the ignition lead and converts it into a pulsed 12 V square-wave signal. The CUMPAN Cockpit Assistant then receives a defined pulse per ignition instead of a disturbed raw signal.

Technical concept
Every ignition event creates a current surge in the ignition lead and therefore a magnetic field. The filter picks up this field without contact, evaluates it and forms a square-wave signal with fixed edges. Power is supplied through a switched 12 V line and ground, so the filter only operates while the ignition is switched on. The signal line is connected to the black RPM signal cable of the CUMPAN. Connection is made through blade connectors, as with the other devices from BEROTEC Motorrad.

Frequently Asked Questions
How do I know whether my vehicle needs the filter?
Two situations point to it: no RPM signal can be tapped at the engine, or the display runs unsteadily, jumps or shows values that do not match how the engine is running. In both cases the filter supplies a defined signal derived from the ignition pulse.
Does the filter work on engines with pencil ignition coils?
No. There the ignition coil sits directly on the spark plug, so an inductive pickup is not possible. On these vehicles the filter is not required, because the crankshaft position sensor already provides an RPM signal that can be evaluated.
Where is the filter fitted on a multi-cylinder engine?
On any ignition lead. The number of pulses per crankshaft revolution is then selected in the CUMPAN settings, so that the displayed engine speed matches the actual one.
Does the ignition lead have to be cut for this?
No. The filter is attached to the outside of the ignition lead with two cable ties. Ignition system and wiring harness remain unchanged, and the filter can be removed again without leaving traces.
